The University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships are a prestigious award offered to outstanding students pursuing a Master’s degree by research or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. These scholarships recognize and support students who have a demonstrated record of academic excellence and a strong potential to contribute to their chosen field of research. There is no application fee, and no separate application is required to apply. Each year Melbourne University Grants 600 scholarships through a Graduate Research Scholarship program. The scholarship is open to both Domestic and international students.

Eligibility Criteria Of The Research Scholarship:

There are two main eligibility requirements:

  • Admission to a Graduate Research Degree: You must first apply for and be admitted to a Master’s by Research or PhD program at the University of Melbourne. If selected, you will be automatically considered for the scholarship.
  • Academic Merit and Research Potential:
    • Domestic students: All admitted students are automatically considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship (fee offset only).
    • International students: Compete for a limited number of Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS) that offer a stipend along with the fee offset. Selection is based on academic merit in your previous degree and your research potential in your chosen field.
  • There is no citizenship restriction Both domestic and international students can apply.

Benefits:

  • Provides a living allowance of $37,000 per year (2024 rate) for up to two years for a Master’s degree or up to 3.5 years for a PhD. This helps cover living expenses while you complete your research studies.
  • Relocation Allowance for the students coming outside of Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

  • You are automatically considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships (including MRS for international students) if you meet the program deadline.
  • Within 10 business days of submitting your program application, you’ll receive notification that a scholarship application has been added to your record.
  • If you have accepted a graduate research course offer and deferred commencement in order to be reconsidered for a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year. 
  • If you are currently enrolled in a graduate research course for which you seek a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year.
